Fallen Stone

close

I seem to be following Pure Joy around on this holiday. Most sites I've seen, Pure Joy has been the last to post.

Sadly, the Gun Rith Menhir is down at the moment. It didn't seem to be too deeply buried in from what I saw, and it's very wet down here at the moment. I'm on a loaned connection, so won't be able to post again till next week, but thought you guys should know about it...

I don't know this stone, but I was saddened to see your posting Ocifant. Worthy of being a 'news' item I'd have thought.

What can be done to make sure that the stone is re-erected properly?

I'm really shocked by this - was it an accident? It did look a bit top heavy when I saw it. Maybe I'm too suspicious but it worries me that stones just disappear, fall over etc (cf Boscawen Ros, and some of my other Land's End posts).

I hope u r enjoying the area as much as I did. Please keep us posted re the lovely Gun Rith menhir!

Sorry I've not been able to post further on this till now. Just got home, to my BB conection :-)

I rechecked the stone on Friday, and it was still prone, lying across the track between the two fields. As soon as I've unpacked I'll sort out the photos and upload them.

Thanks, Kammer for contacting the archealogy people - hopefully they'll be on the case quickly. I did try to get hold of Andy Norfolk, who I know does a lot of conservation and education work for the stones of Penwith, but I've been pretty much incommunicado this week.

Had a great time, and got a huge Weblog to upload once I've sorted everything out...

Photos are now up on the [[Gun Rith]] page.
