Good news about Gun Rith menhir, it has been re-set using a a six-tonne granite base with a socket. There was even a short bit on local tv last night.

BRONZE AGE STONE SET BACK IN PLACE

A prehistoric standing stone - one of the vital features of Cornwall's Bronze Age landscape - was returned to its original site yesterday after being restored. Gun Rith Menhir, a 12ft granite stone, fell over in January and has since been in the care of archeologists.

Investigations carried out on the stone, and the circumstances surrounding its fall, revealed that it had been loose for more than 30 years and was set less than one foot in the ground.

"Most of it was sticking out of the ground," said senior archeologist Ann Preston-Jones. "And it was leaning at an angle of about 10 of 15 degrees.

"Also, we found that at the back of the hole there was a large tree root and we think this was what may have made it fall over, as well as the fact it was a very wet time of year."

A team of stonemasons and archeologists were at the site in Tregiffian, near Land's End, to oversee the stone as it was fitted into a six-tonne granite base.

"It really went very well and only took about half an hour to set in place," said Ms Preston-Jones. "Gun Rith Menhir is an amazingly important part of the Bronze Age landscape dating back to prehistoric times, and may have been linked to ancient fertility rituals."
