Actually, the stone is a very tough pebbled conglomerate, so a pretty harsh scouring is unlikely to do it any real damage, if that's what it comes to. Though how the rock would react to cleaning chemicals I don't know.

There was a conservation team out at Avebury many years ago working on some seriously defaced stones in the Avenue. Mostly students working under the supervision of an experienced stones conservator. Though it took them several weeks to remove the graffiti it wasn’t too much of a problem – the main worry was trying not to damage the lichen in the process.

The conservators were from Bristol Uni so not too far away from the damaged area - if the department is still there they may be able to help.

In the hope that I don't offend anyone but will apologise for in advance anyway, is the lichen on a couple of stones THAT important as there is loads of the stuff about isn't there and it's not an endangered species is it?
