I think you've answered your own question! :-)Actually, the stone is a very tough pebbled conglomerate, so a pretty harsh scouring is unlikely to do it any real damage, if that's what it comes to. Though how the rock would react to cleaning chemicals I don't know.
The conservators were from Bristol Uni so not too far away from the damaged area - if the department is still there they may be able to help.
