The poor quality of some certainly could be accounted for if they were pretty goods given, say, for a dowry or a peace offering. Actually, I must say that I didn't think of the transfer of these axes in terms of an exchange network, because that implies that something physical was given in return. I always had them in my head as gifts given for less tangible commodities, such as friendship.
