Hi, my name is Holly Briers, I’m a 3rd year archaeology student at the University of Manchester. i was just wondering if those who have visited Moel Ty Uchaf stone circle could please fill out this short questionnaire for me. It would help an awful lot! i am doing a phenomenological investigation into Moel Ty Uchaf.

Questionnaire

• Age:

• Sex:

• Class:

• Ethnical background:

• Was the walk up to the stone circle…
• hard,
• fairly hard,
• moderate,
• easy.

• What was your immediate reaction upon reaching the stone circle?

• Was there anything you feel your couldn’t see as it was blocked?

• Did the monument make you feel emotionally different in a particular way? E.g. scared, small, insignificant, made you want to alter the volume of your voice?

• Is there anything else you wish to add?

• Age: 46 now, around 40 when I visited the circle

• Sex: Male

• Class: Um, middle, I guess

• Ethnic background: White British

• Was the walk up to the stone circle…
• hard,
• fairly hard,
• moderate,
• easy.

If I was describing it to others, fairly hard

• What was your immediate reaction upon reaching the stone circle?

:^D (As in, I was grinning!)

• Was there anything you feel you couldn’t see as it was blocked?

Um, in what way? I could see everything around. Or if you mean in a spiritual (for want of a better word) way or something, I don't really'get' that sort of thing!

• Did the monument make you feel emotionally different in a particular way? E.g. scared, small, insignificant, made you want to alter the volume of your voice?

Delighted! Happy! Awestruck by the beauty of the circle and the view.

• Is there anything else you wish to add? Erm, that it seemed more like a kerb/cairn-circle than a stone circle.

Moth

ok, here goes:

34. Female, probably middle class. White British.
Fairly hard walk. Big hill and one of those few welsh days with sunshine.
Immediate reaction - where has the sodding sun just gone. Then "wow"...
Anything blocked - Not that I remember.
Circle didn't really make me feel anything, or at least no more than others. Impressed with the builders, wondering why they built it up there. And like Moth, definitely more of a kerbed cairn. A pretty impressive one, but kerbed cairn nevertheless.

hope that helps - and what exactly is a phenomenological investigation?

cheers

Sam

i was just wondering if there was any tourist information relating to the monument near the site, or if there is an information centre of any kind in the village?

Thanks Holly Briers

i wish to rephrase question 7, as people have misunderstood my meaning

• Was your view of the landscape blocked by mounds etc?

• i would also like to add the following questions

• can you see any water from the monument?

• is the monument situated on the highest hill in the area?

• how far away could you see the monument? was it easily visible from the surrounding landscape?

• Did you feel surprised when you finally got to the monument?.

sorry i keep thinking of more questions to ask. sorry to be a pain.

• Weather at time of visit:
• Physical fitness and ability, e.g. have you got or had any illnesses that may make accessing the site particularly difficult?

thanks Holly
