Is this the BBC being slow on the uptake? Or (judging the photo against some on this site) has someone had another go at the spiral?

Dave Shepherd posted on the NE Readers group today that he was at the site a few weeks ago, and it seems someone has tried to remove the modern spiral carving by hitting it with a rock.
