Rockartuk used to have a page of handy hints on the old rock art in the british landscape site, dunno if it's still there as it got superceded by The Britich Rock Art Collection website. I couldn't find it when I looked just now.

Main tip is, take a plantsprayer full of water, spray away, then get doon on yer hunkers to find the right angle to reflect whatever availble light there is.
