There has been a debate in scottish hill walking circles for years about the wee cairns that mark routes . Many see them as an intrusion and believe if you can't find your way round in mist or are mapless maybe you shouldn't be there . One aspect that people appreciate about wilder areas is being away from as many signs of the hand of man as possible . My personal gripe is the number of commemoration plaques on hill tops , Ben Nevis is covered with them but even remote hills have them , one was erected without permission over some rock art , it all seems a bit selfish , inappropriate and a strange way to express loss .
