In all honesty, I'm amazed it hasn't happened sooner. It's an obvious target for idiots of multiple persuasions.

Hopefully there will be slips or cuttings taken from the tree, to grow another youngster.
There is a precedent of course, it was cut down in the 17th century by the Puritans soldiers, who also had a mission to get rid of the festival of xmas.
Just looked at a 19th century book on Glastonbury Abbey, and many 'slips', were taken over the centuries because of the trees' healing power, but of course it did'nt really blossom on the 25th, because the dates got moved around....

Bastards !!

It's not dead - it's just been topped. I once taught a small class Habitat Management and a lad boasted to me how he'd cleared an ancient apple orchard, and grubbed out the roots. Same thing. Why do people just feed the birds in the summer? If anyone wants to get me some of those live shoots, from the portion of the tree on the ground, and post them to me, I'll try my best to get something out of them. Say they're for a tree expert, if anyone says anything, in the field. About a foot long - I get on well with thorns!
