Arriving at "The White House" on Blackstone edge, from the Halifax direction.As the road dips, all of Greater Manchester and a lot of Lancashire lies below you.

Stunning, especially the first time.

I'm interested in Blackstone Edge, as that is the place on the horizon from one of the important Bolton monuments. I've noticed that the Pennine Way traverses it - a very ancient trackway - and there's a spectacular hill that the Boltonians used to frame a specific rising sun. The hill's toward Bolton, from Tunstall - I think it's Tunstall - and looks a bit like a volcanic stack. I called it Bull Hill and then someone's told me 'that's not Bull Hill'. It would certainly be an ideal spot for a beacon fire tonight - it'd look great from Thurstones, Smithills ...
