Aaaargh, here's the get-out clause - http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/story.asp?j=218091166&p=zy8x9y87z

"The Irish National Monuments Act allows for the partial or complete destruction of national monuments, or finds of significant importance, by the Government if it is deemed to be in the public interest."

Yep. This is the piece that was being contested in the courts and had to stop. This was a change made recently (I believe) and could be unconstitutional.

Worst thing is that it's the minister's decision to say if it's in the public interest!

This one must be seen as significant enough to be a keeper, surely. I haven't been very active on the Tara issue, because, frankly, I didn't see anything threatened that was of national significance. However, this wood-henge is very different.

My only concern is that the site will be reconstructed and made part of a Bru-na-boinne stylee visitor 'experience'*.
