Hi Rhiannon

Been down and had a nose myself this afternoon...stone looks genuine to me...no sign of being cut, no drill holes...but like Chris I am still not sure of its antiquity...

There are loads of BIG stones built into walls and lying around in the area to suggest it just might be from field clearance...but why would someone go to all the trouble of raising a giant like this for a gatepost when there are so many other stones around that would have done the job far easier...

Will post photos when I get the chance.

Mr H

Glad you liked it Mark sir!

It really is a biggie; now again, no proof inherent, but Cheryl Straffon from Meyn Mamvro informs me it aligns directly SW to Carmenellis Hill; this alignment further extruded just misses the settlement at Calvadnack (but hits a long straight field wall a short distance away) and ends at up at Burras menhir on the other side of the hill, which in its turn has a NE (Midsummer solstice sunrise) alignment to Carnmenellis. "So Carvannel stone does seem nicely placed in the ancient landscape."

More grist to the mill at least...?
