Is there any uncertainty as to how the capstones were put into position on this type of monument, then? There should be other visible examples, in structures that may have collapsed, for instance.

As a carpenter for nearly 50 years at the best a rounded stub tenon, but not in the same context. It's only a thought because the stub mortice will be knocked out as the undercarriage of the capstone would have been sheered off.
