Well, to fit with the current situation more than 50% of the presently exposed backstone length would need to be below ground, with such a deep foundation a fall would be highly unlikely. Also, if it were buried so deeply it is very difficult to see how it could have "fallen" into its current location propped against the front stone.

Projections we have seen put the original height at close to that of the front stone, indeed, Borlase thought the capstone was supported only at the front and back forming a "trilithon".

Yet another Trevethy mystery.

I don't believe the capstone ever sat on just the back and front uprights...I think the back upright fell when the capstone was dragged into place.
As for the hole...who knows....we can talk and talk about it till the cows come home...its been there since the first record of the site was made...we ain't ever going to know the truth.

Something else I find interesting Megalithics is a side stone that has a 'cut-out' very similar to the front closure stone. It is shown to good effect in the picture you show of the Quoit on your website. Turned upside down it bears a striking resemblance to the size and angle of the cut-out on the closure stone would you agree?
