Kintyre

As my puter is so slow and old I cannot use the special fancy map browser, so has anybody got any good suggestions of stuff to see on Kintyre, I am off there on NYD for a few days.

Dave

You'll love it. It's a great place with some excellent but little-known sites.

Ballochroy is a must - if only because of its fame as an observatory site.

Kintyre also good for chambered cairns - Brackley and Blasthill amongst the best of the most accessible.

Good standing stone at Beacharra (with not-so-good chambered cairn)

Nice dun at Kildonan

Try the entries for any of these sites and then Sites within 50km for some others that I have visited.

There are some cup and ring sites which I have not seen but can give you references for if you want. No stone circles.

When you get there, look out for "A Field Guide to the Archaeology of Kintyre" by Frances Lynch. Great value at a fiver.

There are no weblogs of my visits but I could put together a more detailed list if you thought you would have time to get round more than the ones mentioned already. Any type of sites of particular interest?

Hi Dave,

The list of sites that Greywether has sent you for Kintyre is hard to beat but don't forget to visit Kilmartin Glen.
Outside of Avebury/Stonehenge, Kilmartin is the best in the UK.
Climb to the top of Dunadd hill fort, place your foot in the ancient carved foot print and, facing the Holy mountain of Ben Cruachan, just feel those centuries peel away!
The visitors centre/museum and the church yard in Kilmartin village will provide a great day out if the weather's inclement (cough). Dont want to put the dampers on your visit mate, but its 'dreich and dreiry'(scots vernacular for crap) at the moment.
