Hope I've read your question right. Try pinch to zoom on the map. Click orange dots for info.

I find changing map from aerial photography to open street map easier to find my way about (click on box of 4 squares at bottom to change)

Many thanks T, very helpful pointers. Will play around with it a bit and perhaps get map reading friend on board. Problem is they are a bit old school and don't own a smart phone :)
