If they are commonplace why is there only one in a museum - they may have been in circulation between monasteries more than a millennium ago but genuine ones certainly are not common now. I think you've probably made the scenario a lot worse by suggesting they are lying around all over the place if you want to take your metal detector out and 'have a go'.

But if you want fake then you can buy them in the Ashmolean Museum shop for £115.00 and available to anyone who can afford it. Maybe if there is a third series it will start with it being examined by an expert and found to have the museum stamp on it :-)

Anyone who has watched the series will have seen in the opening sequence a medieval monk burying the artefact at the spot where it was found so your last paragraph is unlikely.
My good friend K, who liked the series a lot, says the series is only superficially about finding 'treasure' rather instead about finding the hidden treasure of everyday relationships. So on that note I'm bowing out.
There are three or four other jewelled aestel's in museums as plenty were made, but they vary in design. They just chose to use the well-known one in the series but they could have used any other as an example as they are all breath-taking in quality. I see no reason whatsoever why more shouldn't be buried somewhere and will turn up again one day.

Here's another:

And your friend is correct as most people I'm sure will agree.

To me it's just a harmless bit of enjoyable fun brilliantly carried out with no underlying agenda other than what is obvious. Wonderful.
