Unfortunately, there are many stupid errors in the typically slack journalistic article.

Druids were Iron Age priests and were around 2,000 years after the stone circles were built. Their religion didn't exist when the stone circles were built and they certainly didn't worship in stone circles. Stone circles were built by Bronze Age people who worshipped the sun and moon. Druids worshipped in woodlands, where trees were their objects of adoration.

Stonehenge was aligned to the winter solstice, as well as the summer solstice by default. The Heel Stone didn't stand alone, but had a twin next to it, between which the midsummer sun rose. The fact that The Avenue approaches Stonehenge and enters facing the midwinter sunset suggests that Stonehenge was dedicated to the ritual of encouraging the Sun to return from its low point to bring new life in spring. In other words, there is a very real possibility that the monument was dedicated to the midwinter sunset in the south-west, not the midsummer sunrise in the north-east.

There is such ignorance about Stonehenge in the media, in spite of the fact that so much factual archaeological evidence has been published. People obviously don't read the right stuff. Then again, the truth to a journalist isn't as attractive as the idea of druidical sacrifices.

Cheers,
TE.
