Possibly "scratching post " , it might also explain a lot of what became " stones " in the name books .Often found in local clusters , the give away is that they are in the middle of a field and hence have no relationship to boundaries like gates , dykes etc . http://maps.nls.uk/view/102341038#zoom=5&lat=7115&lon=8926&layers=BT
