HeritageTogether is an AHRC-funded project run by Bangor, Aberystwyth and Manchester Metropolitan Universities in conjunction with Gwynedd Archaeological Trust. Our aim is to use photographs of our heritage to create 3D models using a process called photogrammetry. We want to create an online library of our heritage, preserved digitally and accessible to everyone.

The project aims to provide new information about megalithic sites and their locations using 3D digital models, which can be generated from digital photographs.

The project aims to incorporate research by members of the public; we hope people will contribute to the project by uploading digital photographs of sites that they visit. Provided that the photos are taken in the correct way, from the images that people load up, we will be able to generate 3D models.

Wow this looks like fun, for the Summer! I've a few stonehead friends, over on Facebook, so I'll post the link on my page.

I can't see any of the 3d models. Or is it just me?? I've used autodesk 123d catch and you can make an interesting 3d thing relatively easily with a decent amount of photos. Though that wasn't on the scale of a prehistoric site it has to be said. But I guess it'll be something similar? might be fun.

Cool.

Looks a really interesting and worthwhile project.

Juamei, I'm presuming by asking folks to upload their own imagery, the software is using Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms and bundlers (a sub category of photogrammetry), which do not require a calibrated camera.

The guidance on the 'how can you help' isn't great though, and they're going to run into all sorts of problems if users actually follow it to the letter. In fact, they'll be lucky to get even one 3D model.

If your friend works on the project, I'd be happy to offer them assistance on significantly improving their guidance and recording methodologies. (I'm a photogrammetry consultant and have been involved in the field for nearly 10 years).
