I think I may have it. castell tomen-y-mur.
A roman fort with a large norman motte. Burial mounds in the vicinity apparently but you said the mound was large so may very well have been the motte.
Path starts across the road from a parking area near Trawsfynydd. Goes through woodland and emerges near the fort.
I didn't see anything else other than the mound, but then again I was hardly out of broken cover from the wood where the two stones were either side of the track and only looking ahead when I experienced this strange feeling and not able to continue. From where I was the mound was I would say roughly about the same size as the barrow across the A4 on Overton Hill from the Sanctuary. At no time did I see any other signs indicating there was a Roman Fort on offer.

Hi folks,

Sorry to jump in but I have been to the Roman site at Tomen-y-Mur and (as far as I can remember) doesn't match the description given by Sanctuary. The site is clearly Roman - it even has a reconstructed section of fort wall - very impressive it is too!
I have checked my O/S map and can't see any cairns / barrows near by either so I guess Sanctuary was looking elsewhere?

Hope this helps?
