I remember doing many searches on that there internets after you mentioned it first time and couldn't find anything matching the location/description.
Will try again. Would very much like to know which site this is.

Chris - Any ideas from the description? Two standing stones and a mound? Woodland track?

I think I may have it. castell tomen-y-mur.
A roman fort with a large norman motte. Burial mounds in the vicinity apparently but you said the mound was large so may very well have been the motte.
Path starts across the road from a parking area near Trawsfynydd. Goes through woodland and emerges near the fort.
