It was scary moss and more so that they were able to alter my return address so that the sender didn't return it to me but them! It was just the one letter in the address line which you wouldn't even notice and would have no reason to double-check.
Hope you get it sorted soon Mr S. Couple of suggestions meanwhile – use ‘at’ instead of @ and ‘dot’ instead of . when giving out your email on public forums etc. Not completely fool-proof but it helps.

Heard on the radio yesterday of a cunning telephone scam. The villain calls you pretending to be from your bank. Cleverly says you should hang up, ring your bank to check that he’s legit. Good idea you think so you hang up and call your bank. Your bank answers and tells you that everything is legit and not to worry so you give out all your details and the villain walks away laughing to himself. How’s it done? Answer’s upside down at the bottom of your monitor :-)
