June, just to let you know I took both maps and dithered about choices all the way to Swindon! I got to the bus station in time to see a bus getting ready to depart to Chippenham via Calne, realised that Calne was quite near to Cherhill and got on it on the spur of the moment.

I walked from Calne to Avebury over Cherhill Down, lovely day and fairly quiet until I reached Avebury (obviously).

Will plan the Stonehenge bus trip properly before going ...

Thanks tsc (I almost missed this again). Yes, you would need to plan your train journey around the X5 timetable - it would be worth giving it a go as far as Amesbury as it goes through great landscape. Amesbury also has its own prehistoric museum now, so something to do if you have to wait for the bus coming back.
Sounds like you made a good choice anyway - I admire your stamina. I almost moved to Calne earlier in the year - so spent a lot of time on that bus route - a different view of Wiltshire.

When I got to Calne I found that there is a regular bus route to Marlborough, via Cherhill village and Avebury, but I couldn't be bothered to wait for an hour or so before setting off! :)

But would definitely make use of that with better planning another day.

I like the fact I've now walked to Avebury from a different direction each time - from Barbury Castle via Devil's Den and Fyfield Down, from Shepherd's Shore via Wansdyke, Allington Down and the Sanctuary/Avenue, from Broad Hinton via Yatesbury and Windmill Hill and now via Cherhill Down. Certainly has given me a better appreciation of the landscape surrounding the henge.
