I do wonder if he was aware how much outrage his actions would provoke though, he may have underestimated the status the monument holds.

I was looking at the pictures I took back in February 2011, when we walked alongside that section. I don't know exactly where the damage is, but most of the bit between Pontcysyllte and Chirk Castle is pretty decent, certainly a good metre or so tall for much of that stretch.
