Yes indeed. Have you ever seen one doing the sloshing? And do you think it would work in that way in a much shallower hole? Would it do it but maybe less vigorously?

The water and the particles it dislodges.
There is also chemical weathering (hydrolysis ) of the feldspar in granite which may well be the initial weakening and freeze /thaw too .
