Interesting article here about circles constructed in modern times, often in the middle of cities. I think they are equally as valid as the ancient ones

Quite a lot of discussion about Sighthill here:

What do you mean by "valid" though?

I agree with you in general - if they have been constructed with local 'erratic' stones. I hate the idea of blocks of stone being quarried for the sole purpose of constructing a stone circle. Taking the idea of a 'folly' to the limits.

The 'modern' history of stone circles is fascinating, 'The Battle of the Beanfield' by Andy Worthington mentioned in the article rolls down to us as the years pass, so this particular blog is a call to commonsense as far as saving the Sighthill circle.

Does it have a validity? history is always valid Mustard, how should we record it as a has-been, or pride of place in a central green space? I would say the oppressive nature of the police in the Battlefield of the Beanfield is perhaps not the best thing to bring to the fore in the saving of this site, but just witnessed today in photos the 'force' of the police in Sussex as they face protestors over 'fracking'.....

Except, it is of course daubed and graffitied in a manner that makes it very unsightly ;( , there again, it would make Maggie turn in her grave if they kept it .....

This is quite interesting, thanks. This will be helpful to me and my work!
I've been creating a lot of art inspired by a stone circle which mysteriously appeared on my council estate.

A few years back a row of shops occupied this site...until they were destroyed in an explosion! The council flattened the site and constructed this circle in its place.
Gave me the inspiration for this drawing of the estate with a megalith.

I also cast a large concrete abstract sculpture of the estate with a stone cirlce. THe whole process was a nightmare but it looks amazing.

Am currently studying for a contemporary fine art degree here in Hull and megaliths and urban decay are my main inspirations...
