Mold Cape

Went to the National Museum of Wales to see the Mold Cape. To sum up in one word – WOW!

I have of course seen pictures of it in books and seen it on TV but when you see the Cape in real life it is so much better.

Firstly it was a bit bigger than I was expecting but the thing which strikes you the most is the sheer quality of the thing. The workmanship is exquisite. Rows upon narrow rows of different shapes – diamonds, squares, circles etc.
Each band separated by minute borders. It really is a fantastic item to see.
The museum has it well lit as to capture its features and a good free handbook about the Cape is available

Any TMAer able to get to the Museum by the 4th August should do so. The Cape will then be moved to Wrexham.

If that wasn’t enough, the permanent display room the cape is housed in has fantastic other items – a cast of the ‘Red Lady’ of Paviland, a Fire Dog, cup marked stone, pots, stone axes, cremation urns etc, etc, etc. Even without the Cape this is a joy for anyone interested in our Pre History.

For those who may be offended there are Roman items at the back of the room!

It's a great museum. Not forgetting the original decorated stone from Bryn Celli Ddu!
