They do it at Nine Ladies too and sometimes leave messages - prayers I suppose - a bit like lighting a candle in a church.

I think Scottish healing wells are called Clootie wells where people tie things to the trees nearby:

And some trees get coins pressed into the bark like the wishing tree in Argyll. A friend of mine says he often finds coins in the hollows of standing stones (especially in the Peak District), but I've never found any. Anyone else?

There’s this one on the North York Moors – it has about a dozen coins pushed into its cracks. The coins can (and do) cause damage – expanding when hot and possibly causing the stone to crack.

Candles, t-lights, incense and fires in places like West Kennet Long Barrow are another source of damage to monuments – not to mention edible offerings and the vermin (non-human ;-) they attract.

It’s been said a thousand times here and elsewhere – Leave nothing, take only memories.

Me and my kids often come away with pockets full, At the end of the day it's litter isn't it, i do leave it in the trees though and only class it as litter once it's on the floor, and whats all this burying really big crystals at sites [ mainly avebury ] , these fuckers are actually digging big holes around the standing stones to put the crystals as far down as they can get.
I love being at the Swallowhead Springs and feel a sense of welcoming there seeing all the ribbons, beads and baubles left by like-minded folk. I have no problem with it whatsoever as long as it is contained to just the trees/bushes and the monuments left well alone.

Rudston monolith, one of the most famous stones in Britain was crammed with coins last time we went, well over a pound, we collected it up and left it in the collection box in the church.

Isn't ribbon leaving anything to do with the prayer flags you get in the Himalayas, I know it's a million miles away but, we've seen it on TV, and well monkey see monkey do.

Wot about the unlike-minded folk, are they of a like mind?
