Choice of Stones

close

I find it very interesting the 'choice' of stones often used in stone circles and wonder if they tell a story either locally or nationwide?
We get all sorts of course and have seen how moving large stones doesn't appear to have been much of a barrier if they were required, yet we see large open circles with often quite small stones when larger ones are available nearby and larger ones used when smaller ones are available. Then you get a mixture of both, then some 'worked' whilst others are natural. Others appear to be chosen for their shape and other stones level in height whilst others appear to be just random.
Do the even height ones have a different meaning or use to the random height ones and are the worked ones of more significance? Does the large circle of small stones have lesser significance than the large circle with large stones or the small circle like Duloe that I was at a couple of days ago with large stones? A minefield isn't it!!

Good question but I have no answer.
Perhaps they put the apprentices on the smaller circles? :)

I always find that the stones are hard :-)

Well I have another puzzle, four stone, stone circles, why? they obviously make a square.
When Postman put in the photos a four post setting a few days ago, I had just noticed in a book I was reading the four stones at Walton, Powys, you can see photos

here.....http://www.isleofalbion.co.uk/sites/20/the_four_stones.php

4 to 6 feet in height and about 6 feet space in the middle. Looking at the Meini Hirion stone circle and you can almost see a four stones set in a square, is this because they are a guide to building the circle or entrances. I suppose there is no answer to these enigmatic 4 stoners apart from the long and short of it all.....
