I don't actually doubt his sincerity. He probably believed the rods were moving of their own accord. That's the thing with the ideomotor effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ideomotor_effect if you missed it. There's probably better references out there but I really don't have time) - the person with the rods/pendulum really doesn't realise it's them that's moving it!

I'd like to believe in earth energies and dowsing, but there'll always be a certain number of postive results generated by any activity that includes an element of chance. That's probably why there's so much anecdotal evidence. But double blind tests have been done where the number of correct dowsing predictions was repeatedly no more than you would expect by chance. It would be much more unusual if dowsers weren't correct occasionally!

Having said that, I'm prepared to keep an open mind (but as someone once said, not so open that my brain falls out).
