rock art

close

Why is it so hard to find rock art I love looking at the images but I've given up so many times looking for various places.

GPS and 8 figure refs? That said I failed to find a cairn with a GPS and a 10 fig ref 2 weeks ago. I think the grid ref was wrong, but in metre high heather its hard to say.

Failing the GPS, I've found taking a previous visitor with you normally works :)

It's all part of the fun! :)

Usually it's the lighting. Ideally, a winters day, with low angle sunlight, preferably just after a rain shower to make the little buggers visible.

Also, they do hide if they hear you coming. They can fade in and out of the lichen at will.

Tiompan is your man when it comes to finding rock art but I hope he doesn't mind me mentioning the fact that he is recovering from surgery at the moment so may well be missing for a while. Make a speedy and successful recovery George. Best wishes.

Hi paganman,

Good luck with your rock art hunting. A lot of people on this website can help if you let us know in which area you are searching.

Wherever you go, my advice is to get a 1:25,000 O.S. map, and a compass. Learn how to use them - there's lots of stuff on the internet on how to use them. The key is the accuracy of your navigation, when in the wilds, but a little less so when elsewhere.

All the best,
TE.

May I just broaden out on this as a complete rock-art dimwit and ask if it is found mainly in areas of past occupation or virtually anywhere?
