Yeah, let's hear it for the ramblers... let's remember it was the Kinder 'trespasses' which escalated the whole issue of 'access' in the first place. Brave people. Inspiration to ignore - better, to tear down - every section of illegal barbed wire. And to question that which is morally incorrect.

From my perspective the 'immigration issue' has nothing to do with 'race' or 'racism'... but everything to do with a moral requirement to (at least try to) assimilate into the society you migrate into. Learn its history... good and bad... hell, prehistory, even! England in particular is seen as a 'soft touch' by anyone refused entry into other European countries and this has to change. Bliar and his worthless lot completely - and cynically - lost control and this is unforgivable. Perhaps this is retribution for the evils of Empire? Yeah, perhaps we are rightly guilty for what our forebearers did... although being fundamental to defeating the Nazi tyranny was possibly this nation's finest contribution to civilisation. But having experienced the nilhilistic, moronic (learning is taboo, being thick is cool) black culture of the inner city at first hand, and the effect it can have upon intelligent black and asian kids wanting to learn but not being able through 'peer pressure', the issue is not to do with colour of skin, but outlook. The fact is that... Callanish (an awesome Indian gentleman) and Boscawen-un (a rather funky black mohican dude) excepted... I've not seen any non-white faces at the c1000 prehistoric sites I've visited in these Isles. Why not? Is it because the 'minorities' within the UK do not have a Julian Cope to speak to them?

Sorry, I'm not sure what your argument is there, Gladman. It sounds along the lines of - The brave people of this country tramped across land that actually belonged to other richer people. That was Good, because the land is Ours and the land is Sacred. People from other countries flock to get in, because our country is naturally better than theirs. This was Bad, because the land is rightfully ours and we shouldn't let other people live here. By god, we fought the Nazis for it etc. The black youths who live in the cities (I'm not sure how many generations you have to live here before you're not an immigrant any more??) have a bad attitude and like being stupid. This is bad. But it's not about race though. They should assimilate and have the same attitudes and thoughts as the Good Indigenous people have (well, as I have). They should visit prehistoric sites in the countryside and it would do them good. The fact that they do not is further proof of their inappropriateness for living in this glorious land.

I might have misinterpreted you :)

To be fair, you haven't seen anyone at quite a lot of those thousand sites. I've seen people from many plenty of ethnic backgrounds at Avebury, and at Men an Tol. Some of them were tourists, mind. But prehistory is largely a closed book to the vast majority of people in this country, even "well-educated" people who frankly should know better, but prefer shopping and Strictly. Julian Cope doesn't, regretfully, speak to most of them.

There's a whole lot of education missing all round, not just in those people who've come here from abroad. In fact, a lot of immigrants have probably got a better level of knowledge than people whose families have been here for 500 years, because they've tried to learn something about the country they're coming to. And if their efforts at research haven't extended to prehistory, perhaps that's because it's missing from most people's education here anyway. Plenty of "English" people don't know who Winston Churchill was, or Charles Darwin, or IK Brunel, or Isaac Newton.
