I take your point about WKLB, though I would say that the roofed area over the main chambers has been reconstructed and that is where most people climb or sit to view Silbury and the surrounding landscape. Perhaps, as a compromise, access to the reconstructed area could be allowed while the rest of the barrow is cordoned off...
I know what you're saying LS, but a cordoned off area would look horrible. The less clutter the better!

But maybe the thing with the "show" sites that get lots of day trippers (some of whom might be inspired to get more interested and, dare I say, obsessed!) is to accept that a certain amount of wear and tear is inevitable. And fund the repairs/upkeep from the National Trust car park/cafe/shop, etc, rather than using that money to do up a stately home.

Wear and tear is inevitable if people are allowed to keep trampling all over it like they do, but yes, I suppose if they do the same as they do on the bank at the Great Circle for instance where walking repairs are carried out as neccessary then that could be seen as one solution. Others of course will see the very act as being disrespctful even though there are no longer human remains present. I read somewhere that they were giving the WKLB the once over sometime this year anyway as part of general maintenance.

Aye, your probably right there tsc :-( I don’t know what the answer is then. You could put a sign up saying something like, ‘Please do not walk any further along the barrow’ but that is extra signage, and if signs and fences round Silbury don’t stop people climbing it something similar at WKLB is hardly going work.

Perhaps a bit more social responsibility by us lot is one answer. I’ve asked people not to climb the stones at Avebury loads of times (one plonker was actually standing on top of one of the Cove stones!) and not to burn stuff in WKLB, and I know others here do the same. What is needed though is a bit more official backup - ie clear EH or NT signs that we could point to if less responsible people are up to no good. From memory there’s nothing at WKLB asking people not to leave or burn stuff there, when something along those lines could easily be incorporated into, or by, the existing sign(s).

Sometimes fencing and more importantly it's upkeep is essential. Not all footprints are human and cattle can do a lot of damage to cairns etc. Recently a cow, a stupid cow, knocked over a stone at Strichen RSC.
