Rupert's theory is a cracker and is logical and rational enough to stand up to some scrutiny.

Killing for pleasure is human tradition which we still haven't grown out of. Just because we like to think of these places as having some peaceful, mystical, ritual or spiritual purpose doesn't make it so. The ritual may have been blood sports. Why not?

It's not a case of what we would like to think as what the evidence suggests .Bloodsports are hardly primitive ,instead of animals why not the children of the slaves who were forced to build the monument , then eaten in mass celebration at equinox (timber circles , particularly the European rondels often have entarnces close to cardianl points ) , it's possible ,we do much worse today and there was the burial of a child with a split skull at Woodhenge . Not enough evidence for me though . Timber circles were a relatively common feature in the European Neolithic -Bronze Age . Most did not have the great number of concentric rings as found at Woodhenge , Stanton Drew and Mount Pleasant yet were obviously part of the same monumental type and wouldn't provide much sport , some were a bit on the small side ,mice ? plus the ditch is only deep enough in a few cases and we don't if there was even a bank or the depth of the ditch at the one that was proposed for the model ,Stanton Drew .The majority of TC's didn,t have a ditch . Monumentally timber circles are of the same type as stone circles and often their precusor and the evidence does points to a ritual /religious/cosmological use if only due to the number of burials associated with them . Whether we think of the builders of these monuments as nasty brutish and short or enlightened egalitarian sophisticates should be based on evidence not what we would like them to be .
