Is this right to roam stuff valid in practice?

Anyone had good/bad right to roamy experiences with landowners?

Absolutely valid in practice and enshrined in law. I cannot concieve of Life any other way and had genuinely forgotten that the southern neighbours had such heavy restrictions on their basic freedoms. I suppose living under such an oppressive system down South, our freedom to roam and go where we please up here in Scotland must seem a bit unreal and unbelievable.

Come up. Walk anywhere you want. Stop anywhere you wish and take it all in. Fill your boots.

Careful who you call a southerner.

Years ago we were staying in Kirkudbright photographing the circles in the region, of an evening we frequented a local watering hole and the landlord there used to taunt us (in a friendly way) about being sassenachs and southerners. On our last night there we said to him "Well, we're off up north home tomorrow". "North? you mean south" he said. "No" we replied, "we checked the map yesterday and where we live on Tyneside is actually 15km north of here, so you see to us, you're a bunch of southerners".
He was livid.

There are siome limitations ,during the stalking season and grouse shooting it's dangerous for man and beast .Some estates also have a restrictions between April and August when you are asked to stick to tracks to avoid possible problems with ground nesting birds . Splendid irony with signs that declare "Wildlife consrvation area " adjoining grouse butts and traps with five rooks and no water .
