The thing is I suppose that the timber circles being earlier, might have been acknowledging Maes Knoll, though they are situated near the river, which is the more logical position for them. Think also that the timber circle is not centered properly within the stone circle. Of course if the Cove turns out to be a long barrow, that means a long term settlment here, with people using Maes Knoll (it has the west part of the I/A Wansdyke ) and that long route via the Wansdyke (not a bank and ditch but a route) back to such places as Avebury - thats the tenuous link, a prehistoric trackway.
Silbury is'nt a bit like Maes Knoll, more like Kelston Round hill just outside Bath, which Larry Bull allied to the Beckhampton stone circle (if it existed)..

I don't get it meself . Maes knoll is not nearly as auspicious as so many other hills ,it doesn't even get referred to as being " sacred " .Just a hill that happens to be north of Stanton Drew with an IA fort on top .Yep the timber circles were not exactly central being slightly closer to the eastern stones and 7-8 metres away from the stones positions at NS and W .
