The one I saw was deffo venomous...

I did see a smooth snake recently as well, somewhere not-so-megalithic...

Also saw a venomous-looking one on a trek up to some stone circles in the Lake District I don't remember the names of right now.

Taken from the BBC Nature and Science web-site
Adders are not aggressive snakes, and will only attack if harassed or threatened. Although an adder’s venom poses little danger to a healthy adult human, the bite is very painful and requires urgent medical attention.
Apparently, however, there are quite a few cases of dogs dying from adder snake bites so another good reason for keeping dogs on a lead while visiting ancient sites.
