My father found a rock in the driveway that caught his eye. It was a gray rock, glittery, with black speckles over one side. His eyesight isn't great so he didn't notice that the speckles, and this could just be my brain trying to make sense of something random, seem to be letters and numbers. In the middle, fairly clear, is 1648, above that something that seems like something, something E L. Above is no or on depending on how you hold it and some markings look almost like old runes or something. It's just that most of the black marks look like numbers or letters, if it were a couple I'd discount it but...Keep in mind, I am in America, in Louisville which was settled in the 1700's. I am going to try and borrow a camera w/ a macro setting to photograph this thing. When I do I'll post it, but any ideas?

Does sound interesting and I would be interested in seeing a picture of it. Haven't a clue really. 1648 may be too modern for this site however.

Good luck.

Could it be a gravemarker of somesort? It's got to be possible that there were folk in the area before the town was founded.

America- No Prehistory eh- http://www.uky.edu/PR/News/Archives/2003/Aug2003/03-08_pre-historic_cultures.htm

Just because we didn't discover it until late in the day .. does that mean it didn't exist before ?
I would like to hear other peoples views on American history/archaeology.

On the same question: we've just got back from a cold and awesomely wet day on the moors above Hebden Bridge, and found a cluster of previously unrecognized neolithic walling, hut circles, some curious large ringed earthwork, cairns, and a highly likely 7ft-long standing stone in the same little region, laid on its back. Needs resurrecting! Most of the images we took aint come out well at all, as the moor was pretty dark all day and the cold wind & driving rain didn't stop at all. Twas bloody awesome weather!!! So after our Avebury jaunt this weekend, we're back up to have a better and longer look around, to see what else hides underfoot.

Friend flaked with camera. Bastarding bastard. Then I realized, fuck it, it's just some mineral deposits anyways. I looked at it anew, after having not for a couple days and...well, if those are just mineral deposits then that's extraordinary as well because whoever saw mineral deposits that spelled a year in sequence plus other symbols and letters!? I can't wait to photograph this fucking thing! Excuse my American.
