The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

Apologies to Omar Khayyam, but the 'moving' factor of stones seems to be a perennial theme, cropping up here and elsewhere; a theme that continues to inspire a few good theories and myths - from the movement (natural or otherwise) of bluestones, stones that wake and walk away for a drink, stones that are hauled great distances, stood up, pulled down, buried and then re-erected.

Recently on the radio there was a programme about a poetess who writes about moving a stone and, after a dream, was inspired to take a stone from Britain to Australia.

What is it with the moving of stones?

This is all EXTREMELY fancifull stuff to me, but......I've read of MANY accounts of tourists to Hawaii taking samples of lava rocks home with them, only to find themselves in a maelstrom of mis-fortune all of a sudden. The claim is that it offends the volcanic goddess PELE. Every year, the Hawaiian postoffice's recieve loads of boxes containing those same rocks from past tourists wanting those rocks out of there lives, and back where they came from !! That's a damn odd thing.
Just rocks ehhhh?

There's a legend that St. Gregory's Minster was once moved a mile or so to the nearest village of Welburn because it didn't have a church of its own. Next morning, the whole church was back in its original place!

I also love Jewish Folklore too.....and so regarding the SHAMIR worm and King SOLOMON's temple construction and flying stones:

http://jhom.com/topics/stones/shamir.html

the story about drinking stones seem to be countrywide. i don't know about other stones, but i have posted some info about" Maen Llia" that you may find interesting. a similar phenomenon may occur elsewhere but i'm not aware of it.
the info is on the Maen Llia page with some comments from Rhiannon.

And you probably recall that the Swindon Stone at Avebury is reputed to spin on its axis at midnight, cross the road and then come back again.
However, I think there may be a connection between the Red Lion pub and some of the residents of the Mobile Home Park returning to their abodes after a 'lock-in'.

"What is it with the moving of stones?"

Sorry to be blunt, but if you'd tried it you'd know. It's bloody hard work. I guess that's about it really. The stories of circles rearranging themselves id perhaps folk memory of restyling operations during their 'operational lifetimes'.

Geeezz...70p an hour, the minimum wage police would have a field day.

Lots of legends regarding the water from stones used for healing up here too, even little holey stones put in water, not just the big ones.

Giant lore used to be a lot more prevalent, and a lot of the stones were said to have been moved by giants. Probably because you cant imagine anyone smaller lifting one.
