Posted by tjj but not showing up properly...

I hesitate to post this here as no interest at all was shown when I reported a few weeks back that the proposed development on the land adjacent to Coate Water Country Park had been turned down by the Home Secretary.

However, anyone who cares about the Kennet/Winterbourne should take note. The continuing house building around the edges of Swindon has seriously depleted the river Kennet. It is apparently used to supply water to 30,000 homes in Swindon. The proposed new reservior near Abingdon in Oxfordshire has been put on hold until 2020.

I can verify that the last time I was over at West Kennet Long Barrow, just a couple of weeks ago, the river was bone dry.

No it didn't go through ... perhaps the Eds will delete the second attempt for me.

PS: Thanks PMM for posting it up for me, or rather for the river Kennet.

This may be of interest:

"My excavations were commenced in the month of September, after a long continuance of dry weather, so that the adjacent little stream - the Kennet - had been dried up for more than two months:"
