Can anyone who has been to the hunebedden help? What's the best way to get to Borger? We're travelling from Amsterdam (natch...) and figured that the best way is to get the train to either Groningen or Assen. Which is the nicer place and/or the most convenient for getting the bus to Borger? Any suggestions gratefully received..... only three weeks til we hit the hunebed...

If you can cycle, hire bikes at either Assen or Emmen and cycle, its very very flat (despite what the dutch think!). You could cycle to borger and back in a day, as a guide. Otherwise I'd guess both have buses. Grongingen is further away, however, it might quite groovy to visit (John Peel has a favourite record shop there I think). The northern most Hunebedden are south of there, and less visited. In my opinion visiting the borger hunebed is on a par with a visit to stonehenge - a bit of a let down. Museum is nice though.

The train from Amsterdam to leeuwarden / groningen stops in Zwolle. There you can catch the train to Emmen.
On the Emmen train stations you can take a bus or hire a bike to go to Borger (half an hour to an hour depending how fast you cycle).
At the Emmen tourist Office (VVV) located in front of the great ZOO you can get a cycling map that also marks all the hunnebedden and grave-hills and stuff.
The Zoo is also really worth a visit. They have 2 tiger-cups at the moment.

Happy stone-hunting

Yippee! Tomorrow I get the night boat to the Netherlands, so on Thursday I shall be dining upon raw herring, munching on maasdammer, visiting the haunts of my hero, Vincent van Gogh and hiking through HUNEBEDDEN!

Big loving virtual postcard from Holland to you all sometime next week :-)

I won't bother to bore you with stuff about about fish, cheese and dead artists, though.
