I'm into astonomy too, and I know the difference between a planet and a star, or a satellite and a plane, yet I've seen things I can't explain over the Avebury landscape late at night.
Where astronomy is concerned I'm a complete novice but love looking at the night sky; the first time I witnessed the stars at Avebury one frosty winter's night it was completely mind-blowing. I use that metaphor deliberately, I have never forgotten it - it was like I had had a veil lifted from my perception and vision and no, I wasn't 'on' anything.

I don't have a car so am unable to visit Avebury at night very often but a couple of weeks ago I attended the Avebury Open Mic night with some friends. When we came out at about 11.00pm I noticed the same 'stars phenomenon' again - as we walked to the car (which was parked near the Henge shop) there was one very bright star/planet that seemed far bigger and brighter than anything I had ever witnessed before.

The brightest thing in the sky at the moment (and for the last number of weeks) is Jupiter.
