Scubi's got the best answer, stay calm, and walk up to them. I've been in fields with loads of bullocks following and chasing my dog, turn and face them and call their bluff ;) ;) it normally works, if not wave your arms and swear and tell them to sod off ..
Moss, no offence but it's not on taking dogs into a field of cattle, you may have been lucky but many people have been killed or seriously injured by doing so, the official line is to let the dogs lead go and save yourself, new signs are going up saying exactly this.

Just to add, and it goes without saying, don't follow the advice of the tosser who replied to the post there.
Just read that link ... yes, the general consensus was that the 'Walker' bloke was a tosser.
With dogs in mind, this was interesting - by someone called Colm from the same forum as above:
Quote:
My house abuts onto farmland where beef herds are kept and the cattle kept there have on occasion "shown interest" in my dog even though she shows no interest in them. She is aware of when "interest" turns to something more agressive and she can easily, and does, outrun the beasts. If she was on a lead it would be a different story: End quote
