Rich - from the photo, it looks like markings caused by some natural means to me. If you do manage to get out there and give it a look over, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts and see any photos from different angles, as the light in the sample photo is quite flat.

will do KK, i'll give it the photogrammetric treatment and post a still of the 3D model somewhere (If i find the thing). If it does turn out to be natural, it'll be a good example for the likes of Waddington who've proposed the possible replication of nature for CnRs.
