And see following comment there -

"Unfortunately our heritage will continue to lose out for generations to come - as lottery funding is "squandered" on olympic venues which no-one apart from Coe and a few other "has beens" who see the games as one last chance to bring their photograps back onto our front pages, even if only for the duration of the games. All future funding will be drastically cut as we are going to be left with a debt of catastrophic proportions and more lottery money will no doubt be needed - as well as massive tax increases. And also -

"What I'm getting at here is that the ongoing shenanigans at Stonehenge seem to have a similar, not to say uncomfortable, feel to them - re: the 'manipulation' of public approval. One idea after another for new Stonehenge visitor facilities, tossed out at the obscene expense of the British taxpayer, has achieved nothing to date. Nothing, that is, until now when reputations and personalities are coming under the national and international spotlight of the 2012 Olympic Games."

I'll lay odds there'll be no new visitor centre at Stonehenge this side of the Olympics ;-)

Hmmm. Well summat's up. The silence is deafening.

The latest word that I can find is this, dated 13 Feb...

"The location for the new government-backed temporary centre is as yet undecided - with the National Trust, English Heritage and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport locked in battle over proposals.
Previous reports suggested the government may be willing to bow to pressure to situate the building at Airman’s Corner, outside the world heritage site." http://www.bdonline.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=426&storycode=3133985&c=1

So what's happening? Who knows? Here's what it WON'T look like, but nearly did .... http://architecturerevived.blogspot.com/2008/09/stonehenge-visitor-center.html
Last word was that the budget had been reduced to a third of that. Might the government have reduced it still further?

Here's a very good article on the wider implications, and suggesting Stonehenge is cursed....http://www.strangeharvest.com/2008/09/stonehenge-a-black-hole-at-the.php
