I work at a used book store that also gets some new stuff due to factory overstocks, cutouts, etc. I have been on the lookout for the Modern Antiquarian (which I have, but all the pages fell out almost as soon as I opened it and publisher wouldn't help me out) and the Megalithic European since I started there. Unpacking the order yesterday, what did I find? A shiny, brand new, still sealed in plastic copy of the megalithic European...and it was only 10 dollars (around 7 pounds)!!! With my discount, it was a mere fiver. Man, I really like it and it's killing me looking at these pictures and reading about these places. I have got to plan a trip ASAP!
Ah ye lucky devil. Get this: my ex worked for a bit at the enormous Borders bookshop in London's fashionable Oxford Street, organising book signings and other celeb appearances. Though Monica Lewinsky was the most famous of her guests, Lord Cope of Yatesbury also made a visit, signed a couple of ModAntiqs, had a funny turn and locked himself in the disabled loo before legging it out the fire escape never to be seen again. All a rather difficult situation, apparently. But several years later when I got into the book and the website, she said "oh yes I had one of the signed copies, well you know, we got a signed copy of most things as a little thank you." And then as my eyes widened with anticipation of having it appear from a dusty box any minute, "we just sent them down Oxfam". Aaargh!
