Can you remember exactly where you spotted this? Also what the devil's Pahoehoe?

Yep. I saw some last weekend at Drumsturdy / Laws as posted. Law in these parts ( Angus / Perthshire) means a volcanic hill..so where you see a place called Law ( eg Dundee Law) and theres a fort you are in with a chance.

Pahoehoe ( pronounced pah -hoi-hoi) is a hawaiian word and proper geological term for viscous and gaseous lava which flowed and came to a halt...pour out hot thick porridge and it looks like that from the outside...as if it were ropes laid next to each other. The outside of it is often smooth, shiny and reddish..crack it open and its full of lots of irregular gas bubbles...like a badly made Aero bar.

It isnt very durable stuff ( unless encased in vitrifying gunk) and since Hawaii was one of the best places to study recent volcanic material...so the Hawaiian name was used.

It has a near relative called Aa ( Ah Ah) which is just like an Aero Bar..but wasnt as viscous so it comes in eroded lumps rather than ropey thaings.

Theres a miss spent youth for you.

Woodhouse.
