Vitrified forts — How and why?

If that was the case it may add fuel to the fire (excuse the pun!) that the vitrification was done on purpose as oppose to an attack, unless there was some symbolicness related to the sandstone. was it used as a material to enhance vitrification??

Yes, I think it was used in the same way potters use enamel.

It would mean a deliberate act by the builder, and one that took time and planning.

When the site is updated you'll see all the research I've done so far, which is a real mess. I've started to think about catorising the type of forts, since its probable several types have been mixed together.
