Is "Quoits" archaeic english for Quartz?
Chambers Dictionary of Etymology gives it as, "...quoits; later cote a flat stone (1410) quoit a quoit (1477); being borrowed from Old French coite flat stone, mattress, cushion..." Checked out quartz as well but that has a different root - from late Middle High German and, "...probably borrowed from a West Slavic source..."

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks!
